Fresh breath is addictive, especially when the path there involves the taste of real mint. I grew up watching these gum commercials that would try to make you imagine the cool sensation of their minty gum through the television. I chewed those gums on the regular. Once I began using breath spray made with real peppermint oil and little else, it became hard to consider old school gum very effective anymore. Now I believe—much like I do with fragrance—that authentic natural flavor is better in quality and experience. An herbal breath spray made with real distilled mint is such an intense mouth and palette cleanser. It’s the quintessential cool, if you will.
My favorite natural breath spray is the Peppermint Herbal Breath Tonic by Herb Pharm. I went through at least a dozen bottles before realizing I was spending a small fortune on my breath spray habit, paying $7-10 per bottle every few weeks for more. As I was having one of those price-be-damned-I-can’t-live-without-it moments, it occurred to me—I have umpteen kinds of mint essential oil in my perfume studio; I can make my own breath spray and customize it, too!
After searching through some references and recipes, I settled on this simple version…
- To a 15ml (1/2 ounce) spray bottle, add 8-10 drops organic peppermint essential oil and ¼ teaspoon of raw organic honey.
- Fill the rest of the bottle with purified water and shake vigorously so honey blends well with the water and oil.
- Be sure to shake well before each use so that the peppermint oil is properly distributed. Keep in a cool place and use within 2 weeks.
I could not be more excited about this DIY. Now I can use my herbal breath spray with wild abandon rather than conserving it for those important moments when the coffee breath must go. If you’re going to try this out, be sure to use organic peppermint oil from a reputable source!
